Agri engineering and economics programs vie for AACCUP Level IV Phase I accreditation

Two programs of Benguet State University (BSU) namely Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (BSABE) and Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (MSAE) were subjected to accreditation by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) from August 12-17, 2019. Both programs applied for Level IV Phase I accreditation.

Dr. Mario B. Mendoza of DMMMSU headed the accrediting team composed of nine members which includes Dr. Mary Evalyn Rose G. Romero of ISU, Dr. Raphy A. Sugue of ISU, Prof. Armando D. Vale of URS, Dr. Solomon L. Roque of PSAU, Dr. Reermeline B. Plamo of NVSU, Dr. Beverly I. Agustin of PRMSU, Prof. Zoraida E. Bartolome of CLSU and Dr. Luzviminda A. Rodrin of CavSu.

The six-day accreditation activity included document reviews, interview with faculty, students and alumni, visits to the extension sites and class observation. The programs were scrutinized under ten areas: VMGO (Vision, Mission, Goals, Objectives), faculty, curriculum, students, research, extension, library, physical plant and facilities, laboratories and administration.

Results of the accreditation will be released after the AACCUP Board Meeting.

According to Dr. Manuel T. Corpus, accreditation lends prestige to member institution, justified by the possession of quality standards and unremitting efforts to maintain them at high level; helps parents to know which program they may send their children to for quality education; make all those engaged in education aware of standards of excellence which they should strive to attain; make possible for those proposing funding and those who are to fund, to know what to support and how much support is needed; and makes possible for an evaluated program to know its strength and weaknesses, and in what aspects it needs to develop.

Accreditation has also been used as a criterion in administrative decision-making in a variety of ways such as in the leveling of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs); selecting of schools for foreign students and sometimes foreign universities consult AACCUP regarding the accreditation status of programs attended by Filipino students seeking admission.

Accreditation status also serves as a rational basis for budgetary requests; normative financing; for matching-fund schemes where requirements for accreditation are matched with funds from CHED; selection of Center of Excellence (COEs) and Center of Development (CODs) or serve as a requirement for the conversion of a college to a university and as a factor in assessing the appointment/transfer of an SUC President.//JSTabangcura
