Faculty and students reap awards in various tilts

Benguet State University (BSU) excelled in its four-fold function as faculty and students took home several awards and recognition from different contests and award-giving bodies.

For research, Bernard C. Tad-awan, David Sumalang, Joel S. Acyapas, Johnwayne Tosay, Luis Calama and Marjoe S. Salavaria won 3rd place for their oral presentation of the paper “Shiitake Production Technology as component of Arabica-Based Agroforestry in the Cordillera” during the 30th National Research Symposium held at Philippine International Convention Center on November 7-8, 2018.

Under instruction, Belinda A. Tad-awan was awarded as Outstanding Teacher (Higher Education Institution) during the 2018 Division Search for Best Performing Schools and Outstanding Teaching and Teaching Related Non-Teaching Personnel.

During the celebration of the 118th Benguet Foundation Day, College of Arts and Sciences Gregorio C. Taag, was one of the recipients of the Benguet Leadership Award.is award aims to give tribute to the unsung and ordinary Filipino citizens and organizations whose services contributed to the country’s development priorities.

Likewise, Islay Erika A. Bomogao, a Grade 12 student of BSU- Secondary Laboratory School was given a plaque of recognition as an Outstanding Student Leadership Award in celebration of the 118th Benguet Foundation Day.The province of Benguet recognized her extraordinary endeavors and pioneering efforts in her passion, determination and commitment to excellence.

Mt. Breeze and Ang Tulay, the official English and Filipino publications of BSU- Secondary Laboratory School (SLS) also bagged awards during the 2018-2019 Regional Press Conference. Mt. Breeze ranked 5th place for its Sports Page. Ang Tulay, also landed on the 5th spot in the Best Paper Page Category for its Pahinang Agham at Teknolohiya.

Ang Tulay writer Crael Lawa won 3rd place in the “Pagwawasto at Pag-uulo ng Balita” contest while Mt. Breeze writer Nicole Cayambas got 5th place in the Feature Writing contest. Lawa will compete for the National Schools Press Conference which will be held in Lingayen, Pangasinan on January 28 to February 1, 2019.

“For the national press conference,we instruct the students to be updated and read on the current events and issues, we also make sure they are well-trained,” said Agustin R. Nang-is adviser of Mt. Breeze.

Moreover, the Mountain Collegian, the official student publication of BSU raked 16 group awards and 18 individual awards during the 20th Regional Higher Education Press Conference.

Aside from writing, BSU also excelled in sports. During the Benguet Provincial Athletic Meet, BSU ranked 4th over-all with 28 golds, 38 silver, and 35 bronze.

In addition to those awards, BSU Glee Club won 2nd place in the Saniweng Songfest 2018 on December 16, 2018 at University Gymnasium hosted by the University of the Philippines Baguio.//Mike Payangdo
