The Fulbright Philippine Agriculture Alumni Association, (FPAAA) Inc. held its annual national conference and agrifishery R&D Festival at Benguet State University on July 19-22, 2017. The conference with the theme, “Agritourism for Community Empowerment,” was participated by 44 Fulbright alumni; 150 students, faculty and staff; and 200 farmers.

The opening program on July 20, 2017 at the BSU gym featured former BSU president Dr. Rogelio D. Colting as the Keynote Speaker. Dr. Colting made a connection between agritourism and organic agriculture. He explained that organic farms could showcase educational themes, organic farming technologies, environmental conservation, outdoor recreation/relaxation and marketing organic products. During his term, Dr. Colting trailblazed the advocacy and development of organic agriculture. He declared BSU as a pro-organic University in 2004 and from then on initiated programs on organic agriculture.

BSU President, Dr. Feliciano G. Calora Jr. and Dr. Pita Picpican representing DOST-CAR Regional Director, Dr. Victor B. Mariano also attended the program.

The opening program was followed by the photo and poster exhibits, technical workshops and farmer’s techno fora. The Fulbright alumni served as mentors, facilitators and resource speakers in the said activities.

“After the conference, we hope that the participants will be empowered, go back to their communities, contribute to their communities,” said FPAAA president, Dr. Danilda Hufana-Duran. She added that the conference is also FPAAA’s way of contributing to the professional development of the participants. The participants come from 16 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and two National Line Agencies (NLAs).

On July 21, US Deputy Chief of Mission, H.E. Michael Klecheski along with Benguet Governor, Hon. Crescencio C. Pacalso, Benguet State University President, Dr. Feliciano G. Calora, Jr., former BSU President, Dr. Rogelio D. Colting and DOST-CAR Director, Dr. Victor B. Mariano joined the participants in a “boodle fight” lunch.
