This year’s Nutrition Month celebration with the theme “Healthy Diet: Gawing Habit-for life” was launched on July 10, 2017 during the regular Monday Flag Ceremony. The launching, facilitated by the faculty and staff of the College of Home Economics and Technology, featured a talk by Candice S. Willy, Nutritionist Dietitian IV of the Department of Health-CAR.

Willy’s talk focused on ways the University could promote healthy lifestyle among employees and students. She also invoked everyone to help one another in advocating healthy diet by being role models.

“We as adults should also serve as role models to the younger ones, walang silbi kung sinasabi natin ‘kumain ka ng fruits, ng vegetables’ tapos nakikita nila yung adults panay panay naman sa fastfood, or parang yun ang ginagagawa nating pampa premyo ba (it’s useless to tell our children to eat fruits and vegetables when they always see us going to fast food restaurants or when we give fast food meals as rewards),” she said.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has been a topic of various University seminars as well as the aim of some activities such as the Centennial Fun Run of the BSUGEA. The talk of Willy is a reiteration of these seminars and activities.

In the same occasion, the result of the BSU Centennial Weight Loss Challenge was also announced. Felicidad F. Del Rosario won the challenge besting three other challengers. Del Rosario lost 14 kilos in 100 days improving her BMI (Body Mass Index) from 29.68 to 26.9.

“I joined the challenge because I wanted to be healthy, I experienced bullying because of my body weight and I wanted to increase my confidence,” said Del Rosario before receiving her award.

She added that jogging every morning for at least 30 minutes and lessening rice consumption helped her sleep well.//JSTabangcura
