The Department of Statistics under the College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences (CNAS) of BSU took part in the 16th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) held on October 1–3, 2025 at The Manila Hotel. The convention was organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) under the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) with the theme “Accelerating the SDG Pace of Progress: Mobilizing Data for All.”
The NCS, conducted every three years, is the country’s largest gathering of statisticians, researchers, academicians, and professionals from both government and private sectors. It serves as a platform for discussing statistical innovations, exchanging research findings, and strengthening collaboration toward data-driven decision-making and sustainable development.
Representing BSU was Marycel T. Sajise with BSU students who presented their research papers during the convention. Joan L. Cabusao, a graduate of the Master of Arts in Applied Statistics under the advisorship of Freda Kate D. Samuel, presented her thesis titled “Applying Computational Classification Methods on the Determinants of Poverty Status in Central Luzon: A Comparative Analysis.” Yrica Mae A. Banganga, a BS Statistics student, presented their undergraduate thesis on “Risk Factor Analysis of Hemodialysis Patients in Baguio-Benguet” on behalf of her co-authors Shainna Jhunnith P. Quedado and adviser Freda Kate D. Samuel. Meanwhile, Jan Homarl T. Alambra, a graduate of the Master of Arts in Applied Statistics under the advisorship of Marycel T. Sajise, presented his thesis titled “Analysis of Risk and Vulnerability among Families in Lingayen, Pangasinan Using Logistic Principal Component Analysis and Association Rule Networks.”
The three-day event featured plenary and simultaneous scientific sessions covering topics on economic progress, poverty, environment, agriculture, health, education, governance, and the use of technology in statistics. Participants also attended tutorials on the practical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced survey design using KoboToolbox.
Assoc. Prof. Sajise emphasized that the convention provided valuable insights into the role of data innovation and integration in accelerating the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She added that participation in such events enhances BSU’s commitment to research excellence and strengthens the capacity of its students and faculty to engage in data-driven research, instruction, and policy advocacy.//MT.
