Level II nurse learners of Benguet State University gained valuable experiential learning opportunities through an orientation conducted on October 10, 2025 by two newly affiliated partner agencies of BSU—Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital in Bauko, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur Medical Center in Candon, Ilocos Sur, both Department of Health (DOH)-accredited hospitals at the Everlasting Hall, Research and Extension Building.
During the morning session, Dr. Valentin C. Marcelo, Chief Nurse of Luis Hora Regional Medical Center, oriented a total of 194 nurse learners. He presented the hospital’s Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives (VMGO) and introduced the key personnel of both the Nursing and Medical Services. Dr. Marcelo also discussed the hospital’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and clarified the roles and responsibilities expected of nursing learners during their clinical duties. In addition, he provided insights on the nursing process, the Department of Health (DOH) 8-Point Agenda, and the institutional targets of the hospital. He emphasized the importance of professional conduct and ethical nursing care, reminding the students that, “As a nurse, you should render care without prejudice to race, gender, or belief. Be culturally sensitive, respect your clients’ decisions regarding treatment, but ensure they clearly understand the consequences of non-adherence. Always observe gender inclusivity and sensitivity in delivering patient care.”
In the afternoon, the orientation continued with the nursing personnel from Ilocos Sur Medical Center, led by Myra B. Gazmen, Chief Nurse. She was joined by Mylene V. Rosario, Nurse Supervisor; Princess A. Naungayan, Senior Head Nurse of the Emergency Room and Outpatient Department; Jayvee Eduardson A. Avisa, Supervisor of the Obstetrics and Surgery Wards; and Alexander O. Andino, Supervisor of the Operating Room and Delivery Room Complex. The team presented the hospital’s Vision Mission , and Goals (VMGO) and provided a comprehensive discussion of the general and specific policies governing each clinical unit. Their presentations underscored the hospital’s standards of care, operational procedures, and expectations for nursing students during their clinical rotations.
Following the orientation, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between BSU and Ilocos Sur Medical Center formally establishing their partnership as new affiliating agency. The ceremonial signing was held at the office of BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan.
The orientation served as an essential preparatory experience for the nurse learners as they embark on their hospital exposure preparing them for a deeper understanding of their professional roles and strengthening their commitment to deliver compassionate, safe, and culturally sensitive nursing care. This initiatives align with #SDG3 (Good Health and Well-Being), #SDG4 (Quality Education), #SDG5 (Gender Equality), and #SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals).//JS.Esco
