A total of 178 Grade 8 students of Saint Louis School, Inc (SLSI) held their Community Engagement Program at the BSU Office of Extension Services Demo Farm from March 18 to 21, 2024.
Totaling four 8th grade sections, one section is accommodated each day. With the guidance of OES staff, the students are divided into four groups. Each group alternates in four activities to maximize their exposure to farming basics: weeding, land tilling, pricking of lettuce seedlings, and planting lettuce.
Before the work immersion, earlier on February 27, OES staff Lambert Atas and Casmir S. Ligat, were invited as resource speakers for a brief discussion on the situations of community farmers and the basics of farming.
The immersion activity is part of the SLSI curriculum, Community Engagement Program, which requires the students to have proper exposure to different communities. Specifically, Grade 8 students are required to immerse themselves with farmers.
The program is also aligned with the university’s extension agenda in Development Delivery Support and Training Services, which caters to but is not limited to, Student Transformation and Enabling Projects.
Thus, the activity reinforces the realization of the goals of SLSI and BSU.//
