With the theme “Soar High! BBEAL!,” the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) Season 36, hosted by Baguio Central University (BCU), commenced Saturday morning, October 18, at the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) closed gym.
Student athletes and coaches from nine different universities gathered to compete in this year’s games with the prospect of making a name for their teams, namely: the Atoms from Baguio College of Technology (BCT); the Cavaliers from Philippine Military Academy (PMA); the Navigators from Saint Louis University (SLU); the Fighting Maroons from University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB); the Wildcats from Benguet State University (BSU); the Cardinals from University of Baguio (UB); the Jaguars from University of Cordilleras (UC); the Admirals from CCDC; and the Eagles from BCU.
“This theme is all about promoting sports, excellence, teamwork, and cognitive sphere. To all participating athletes, previous BBEAL competitions served as a platform to showcase their skills, determination, and sportsmanship. May you inspire and complicate each other to reach new heights in your respective chosen sports,” BCU president and the season’s overall chairman, Dr. Margarita Cecilda B. Rillera said in her message.
CCDC President, Dr. Sherry Junette M. Tagle delivered the welcome remarks, where she recounted BBEAL’s history, saying that many of her colleagues present were participants themselves in BBEAL 36 years ago.
Moreover, she advised student athletes to seize each moment with grit and passion, while still enjoying the games.
Before the games kicked off, winners from the previous BBEAL season hosted by PMA received their awards. Meanwhile, the UB Cardinals were hailed as the overall champion with 734 points, followed by the UC Jaguars, who won first runner-up with 589.5 points, and the SLU Navigators, who won second runner-up with 372.5.
After the opening ceremony, basketball teams from BCU, UPB, SLU, BSU, CCDC, UB, and PMA played four consecutive matches in the same venue.
SLU’s Navigators prevailed in the men’s basketball match against BSU Wildcats with a tally of 97-63, while CCDC Admirals won narrowly in the women’s basketball match against Wildcats with a score of 94-89.
After their respective game, a member of the women’s basketball team from the BSU Wildcats reported that they needed to improve their strength, conditioning, endurance, and defensive strategies.
More games in various sports are set to follow in different universities across Baguio City and Benguet this coming October and November.
For the first half of the season, BBEAL will feature basketball, archery, sepak takraw, wushu, badminton, chess, table tennis, and swimming.
