The Benguet State University Open University (BSU-OU) celebrated its 29th Foundation Anniversary with the theme “Sustaining Borderless Education.” This milestone brought together alumni, students, faculty members, the community, and leaders.
The program commenced with a thanksgiving service led by Rev. Matias C. Angiwan Jr., followed by a cultural performance by the BSU Kontad and the singing of the national anthem by the Glee Club.
Following the welcome remarks by the Assistant Director for Open Distance Learning of the Research and Extension, Igrelyn P. Pinos-an, University President Kenneth A. Laruan honored those who started the program in 1997, making education successful in keeping with the pace, time, and course through the years. He also stated that education should never be put behind us and that a strong community of services should continue to open doors of opportunity and empower people.
La Trinidad Mayor Hon. Roderick C. Awingan expressed the support of the Local Government Unit for the distance learning concept of the university. He noted that it helps the personnel who are studying give the necessary services being taught by the academe for them to be ethical and responsive while balancing their professional duties.
University of the Philippines – OU Chancellor Joanne V. Serrano recognized the work BSU-OU has done. “Through open and distance learning, you have made education more flexible, more inclusive, and more responsive to the realities of learners and the needs of communities,” she added.
The celebration also featured commemorative messages from former OU Directors, including Lita M. Colting (July 2008-October 2014), Romeo A. Gomez Jr. (November 2014-December 2020), Esper L. Feliciano (January 2021-July 2022), and Leonard T. Apilis (August 2022-December 2024).
They shared the achievements, challenges, they experienced and lessons learned during their term as heads of the office.
OU Director Samuel S. Poliden also shared his message of gratitude to the university for its continued support. Afterwards, tokens and plaques of recognition were awarded to the previous and present personnel, faculty members, and students of the Open University.
In his closing remarks, VP for Administration and Finance Richard H. Kinnud stated that although open and distance education once appeared unusual and different from the traditional image of a university classroom, the Open University has consistently brought back new opportunities with wider reach and new ways of serving learners beyond the physical campus.
