In an era where social media has transformed into a formal communication tool for organizations worldwide, Benguet State University (BSU) recognizes the critical importance of protecting its brand identity and guiding its constituents’ online behavior. This policy, officially known as the “BSU Brand Security & Social Media Policy,” was crafted to address the evolving landscape of digital communication and its potential impact on the University’s reputation.
Once unthinkable for a university to have a social networking site account, social media now plays a crucial role in brand awareness, recruitment, and community building for institutions like BSU. However, this digital ubiquity also presents challenges, particularly concerning brand security, such as the unauthorized use of University insignias or the premature disclosure of confidential information.
This policy aims to protect the BSU brand and its personality, which is encapsulated in its Vision, Mission, Goals, and Core Values, and is represented by the actions and pronouncements of its officials, employees, and students. It also serves as a comprehensive guide for all University constituents on appropriate conduct in social media as it relates to their affiliation with BSU. The document outlines definitions of key terms like “Brand Identity,” “Brand Personality,” and “Brand Security,” and provides clear guidelines on the authorized and unauthorized use of the BSU Seal and other University insignias. Furthermore, it addresses critical aspects of social media behavior, information disclosure, and the establishment and maintenance of official social media accounts, alongside the corresponding penalties for violations.
This policy supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #SDG4 and #SDG16. It also contributes to #SDG5. Its emphasis on the use of gender-sensitive language and refraining from sexist remarks during interviews and public appearances directly supports gender equality within the university’s public discourse.
