The Doctor of Medicine is a four-year post-baccalaureate program with basic science and clinical courses intended to teach students the essentials of becoming a Medical Doctor. It consists of three years of academic instruction and one year of clinical clerkship. Each academic year is divided into two semesters of at least eighteen weeks per semester, exclusive of registration and comprehensive examinations. The core contents of the Doctor of Medicine program are presented through traditional curriculum using subject-based or discipline-based curriculum starting from basic principles and theories of medicine that are taught in the first 2 years, followed by clinical courses that begin as early as the first semester of Year II and expand throughout the succeeding years. At the end of the 4-year program, the student can demonstrate the following learning outcomes: clinical skills, diagnostic and therapeutic skills, patient investigation, patient management, health promotion and disease prevention, communication skills, medical informatics, application of basic, social and clinical sciences and underlying principles, appropriate attitudes, ethical understanding, and legal responsibilities, decision-making skills and clinical reasoning and judgment, the role of the doctor within the health service, and personal development. The program requires a Comprehensive Oral and Written Examination (COWE) after the clinical clerkship to assess the student’s ability to demonstrate the learning outcomes. Graduates shall be conferred the degree
Doctor of Medicine, the primary educational qualification for the Physician Licensure examination.
OBJECTIVES
The program aims to develop professional physicians for the Philippines Healthcare System. The program’s graduate is a primary care physician who can pursue general private medical practice after passing the Philippine Licensure Examination (PLE). With further training, the program graduates can pursue the following careers: General medical practitioner; Clinical specialist, Research/Medical Scientist/Innovator; Health Professions Teacher; Health Administrator; Health Information Manager; Health Economist; and Health Policy Maker. Specifically, the program aims to equip graduates with the following outcomes:
- Competently manage clinical conditions of all patients in various settings.
- Convey information, written and oral formats, across all types of audiences, venues and media in a manner that can be easily understood.
- Initiate planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation of programs and health facilities. Provide clear direction, inspiration and motivation to the healthcare team/community.
- Utilize current research evidence in decision making as practitioner, educator or researcher. Participate in health-related-research activities.
- Effectively work in teams in managing patients, institutions, projects and similar situations.
- Utilize system-based approach in actual delivery of care. Network with relevant partners in solving general health problems.
- Update oneself through variety of avenues for personal and professional growth to ensure quality healthcare and patient safety.
- Adhere to national and international codes of conduct and legal standards that govern the profession.
- Demonstrate love for one’s national heritage, respect for other cultures and commitment to service.
- Adhere to the principles of relevance, equity, quality, and cost-effectiveness in healthcare delivery to patients, families, and communities.
- To embody the core attributes of a BSU graduate which is to become a transformative leader, resilient professional, innovative researcher, a cultural steward and a service-oriented collaborator.
GOALS
The primary goal of the BSU COM shall be to develop a corps of professional physicians to help strengthen the healthcare system of the country, as well as to respond to the human resource development needs of the Province of Benguet and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
