The College of Social Sciences (CSS) led the October 7-Flag Raising Ceremony and the start of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month celebration.

Following the ceremony, Edmar G. Betudio, a faculty member at CSS, delivered his message highlighting the importance of indigenous culture and identity.

“Indigenous people matter. Indigenous culture matters,” Betudio emphasized in his message.

He commended the university’s efforts to incorporate indigenous traditions into campus life, including the playing of gongs; singing of Cordilleran songs; the preparation of indigenous dishes such as 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘬𝘱𝘪𝘬𝘢𝘯 and 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘵; and the integration of IP-related courses into the curriculum.

Betudio also raised concerns about the negative depiction of Indigenous Peoples (IPs), often due to ignorance of indigenous identities. Despite these pressing concerns, he encouraged the BSU community to nurture, value, and respect IPs, treating them the way we expect them to treat us.

“This month serves as an avenue to cherish precious traditions and our culture. We continue to educate ourselves and our community on the culture and diversity of being Indigenous Peoples or the Cordillerans. We have a lot to offer, our practices, our traditions, our music, which it can never be denied to have contributed to our ethnic identity,” Betudio said.
