Benguet State University (BSU) committed support to ending Violence Against Women (VAW) by joining the annual 18-Day Campaign. A kickoff ceremony was held at the Administration Lobby to mark the beginning of BSU’s participation in this initiative.
Gender and Development (GAD) Director Estrellita M. Daclan highlighted the event’s significance, emphasizing its alignment with the Philippine government’s commitment to safeguarding the human rights of women and girls.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about the various forms and impacts of VAW and to promote effective interventions for prevention and response. It also intends to mobilize individuals, communities, and the government to work together to create a comprehensive response to VAW, with a strong focus on prevention.
In his message, BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan underscored the crucial role of women in society.
“You are the backbone of the families. Nurturing the upbringing of children at home. So you have to be protected from violence,” he said.
Administrative Services Division Chief Matias C. Angiwan Jr. also urged everyone to continue supporting the advocacy and other gender and development initiatives even after the 18-day campaign concludes.
The event was also highlighted with the lighting of the #OrangeYourIcon which enjoins government offices, private institutions, and the participating stakeholders nationwide to illuminate their most prominent landmarks and iconic sites in orange. The color orange represents hope and future free violence against women and girls.
A Zumba dance participated by BSU employees was held after the ceremony.
BSU has lined up several activities to support the VAW campaign, including the bike ride on December 6, 2024 and a culminating program on December 16, 2024. The culminating program will feature a VAWalk Parade and a training forum.
