The evaluation of Benguet State University’s Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program officially began during the virtual opening meeting. The assessment is being conducted by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP).

The program opened with an introductory video showcasing BSU, followed by welcome remarks from VP for Academic Affairs Janet P. Pablo. Expressing optimism for the degree program’s first AACCUP survey results, Pablo commended the accreditors for their dedication in guiding BSU’s quality assurance endeavors.

“We welcome your insights, for they will help us grow stronger, more resilient, and more responsive to the needs of our students, as well as of society,” she said.

Delivering a message on behalf of BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, VP for Administration and Finance Richard H. Kinnud drew inspiration from the fable of the Three Little Pigs. He shared that only the third pig’s house stood firm against the wolf because it was built on a strong brick foundation.

Kinnud likened those bricks to building a strong degree program through competent faculty, relevant curricula, meaningful research, effective extension services, adequate facilities, and a genuine commitment to student success.

“Today, we open our doors not merely to be evaluated, but to demonstrate the foundation that our BS Chemistry program has been steadily building through the years. This milestone reflects the collective efforts of our faculty, staff, students, administrators, and all other partners in pursuit of academic excellence,” he stated.

Following the messages, Office for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Director Joana I. Alafag introduced the BSU officials and the AACCUP Team Leader. College of Natural Sciences Dean Sherlyn C. Tipayno also introduced the Local Task Force involved in the evaluation.

Accreditation Team Leader Rhea Catalina P. Padayao from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture introduced her co-AACCUP accreditors and shared the purpose of the accreditation. According to her, accreditation is an opportunity to recognize accomplishments, validate best practices, encourage innovation, and recommend strategies that will further strengthen a degree program.

“Ultimately, accreditation is about ensuring that every graduate receives a quality education and is equipped with the knowledge, competencies, values, and skills needed to become globally competitive professionals and responsible citizens,” Padayao said.

Other accreditors include Ammie P. Ferrer from Cavite State University and Ruvy M. Tuble from Carlos Hilado Memorial State University.

This was followed by the accreditation proper, which includes a review of program documents, interviews, and a virtual inspection of facilities. The AACCUP assessment of the BS Chemistry program is scheduled until July 31, 2026.//EBawayan
