The University Business Affairs (UBA) Office hosted a training on sustainable packaging and labeling as part of the first UBA Festival. The event was attended by students of the Bachelor of Science and Food Technology program alongside staff from the Food Processing Center (FPC) and Bakery Project.
In his opening remarks, VP for Business Affairs Josel M. Florentin highlighted that the seminar aimed to improve and modernize the packaging and labeling of BSU products to make them more competitive.
He emphasized that the initiative directly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals including no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, economic growth, sustainable communities, responsible consumption, climate action, and protecting life below water and on land, by focusing on eco-friendly packaging and proper waste management.
Florentin hoped that the participants would actively engage as learners, transitioning from “empty cans” to filled ones by absorbing valuable insights throughout the training program.
In his presentation as guest speaker, Angel T. Basbasan Jr., Supervising Science Research Specialist from the Packaging Technology Division of the DOST – Industrial Technology Development Institute discussed the different types of packaging materials such as plastics, fibers, paper, metals, and glass, outlining their properties and appropriate applications based on product and market needs.
Basbasan emphasized that choosing the right packaging material involves understanding its characteristics such as thermal sensitivity, barrier properties, and sustainability to ensure product quality, customer satisfaction, and safety.
He further explained that key factors such as the product’s sensitivity to moisture, oxygen, light, and temperature, as well as the shelf life, market destination, and safety regulations must be carefully considered when choosing practical yet eco-friendly solutions.
The presentation concluded with an interactive question and answer session.
Afterwards, Basbasan visited the FPC and bakery facilities where he evaluated their current packaging materials. He also provided direct critique and advice on the most suitable materials for their specific product.//DPaydowan
