The Vocational and Placement Unit (VPU) is the primary mechanism of the Benguet State University in planning, initiating, and evaluating career and job placement services for its students and alumni. It is also the conduit of the Department of Labor and Employment by acting as a Public Employment Services Office (PESO) in implementing local employment services.

FUNCTIONS

  • monitors programs for student employment such as the Student Assistantship Program and the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES);
  • gathers information from graduating students which are useful in tracer studies and employment opportunities;
  • conducts career counseling and career coaching to BSU students and other requesting schools, and
  • facilitates the approval and dissemination of employment postings.

Student Employment Services
Student Assistantship Program (SAP)

The SAP is a student employment program that facilitates the hiring, screening, deployment, and evaluation of student assistants. Student manpower is an economical labor force that supplements some manpower needs of various offices in the Benguet State University. Students that are in need of part-time jobs while enrolled in the university are the primary clients. Job vacancies, qualifications, and requirements are posted at the OSS Facebook Page usually at the beginning of each semester.

Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES)

The SPES is DOLE’s special employment program that aims to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging employment during school breaks. Employment is through government agencies and other establishments, allowing them to pay 60% of students’ wages and 40% through education vouchers to be paid by the DOLE. Job vacancies, qualifications, and requirements are posted at the OSS Facebook Page usually towards the end of the 2nd semester.

Student Employment Referral System

A referral system that aims to help students who are in dire need of financial assistance by referring them to work as part-time helpers to BSU faculty and staff who are willing to accommodate these students. The faculty member or staff will be responsible for financially compensating the services rendered by the students. Opening a job vacancy may be coursed through the OSS-VPU office. Available job vacancies will be posted in the OSS Facebook Page.

Employment Linkages/Liaison
Employment Posting

A service that accepts and evaluates job vacancy postings from direct-hiring establishments/companies or businesses. Approved job vacancies for posting are posted in all available bulletin boards or selected social media accounts of the BSU/OSS. Alumni of the university as well as job seekers around the BSU community may check and validate these vacancies or may seek referral and recommendations from the VPU.

Jobs Fair and Special Campus Recruitment Activities

A service that gathers employers and job seekers in a venue for job match-up and possible employment. Coordination for these types of recruitment activities are coursed through the OSS-VPU office.

Career Education Services
School Promotion

This is a service to inform prospective BSU students about the various undergraduate and graduate programs of the university. It aims to introduce the BSU, its flagship programs, campus locations, facilities, and general ambience of its student life. The qualifications for admissions, requirements, and application procedure are discussed among interested Grade 12 students in high school as well as students who wish to transfer to BSU.

Individual Career Coaching/Guidance

Career coaching and guidance aims to give career and employment coaching to students and alumni. It is also a service to assist job seekers in preparing their job application and ensuring preparedness for gainful employment.

Career Education Activities

A service that aims to help students by equipping them with timely and relevant information that is useful in making informed career decisions. The Labor Education for Graduating Students (LEGS) is an activity for graduating college students as they embark on job searching, while the Career Education Service (CarES) is an activity for senior high school students as they decide which direction to take after graduating high school.
